Born in Shanghai, China, Xuhong Shang received his B.F.A degree in Painting and Drawing from Shanghai Teacher’s University in Shanghai, China, his M.A. degree in Painting and Drawing from Illinois State University in Normal, Illinois, and his M.F.A degree in Painting from Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia
For the past fifteen years Professor Shang has exhibited his work in New York City, Chicago, Atlanta, Miami, Philadelphia, Vienna, Tel Aviv, Geneva, Barcelona, Kumamoto, Hong Kong, Singapore, Shanghai and Beijing. He has exhibited at such venues as Sotheby's; Nexus Contemporary Art Center, Atlanta; Southern Florida Art Center, Miami; Kumamoto Fine Arts Museum, Japan; Richard Gray Gallery, Chicago; and Plum Blossoms Galleries. He is the recipient of a National Endowment for the Arts/Southern Art Federation Regional Visual Arts Fellowship (1995) and Art Matters Fellowship (1993). Articles have been written on Professor Shang's work in Asian Art News, Sculpture and Art Papers magazines, as well as in such newspapers as The Atlanta Constitution and World Journal. His art work has been included in books and catalogs such as New American Paintings (Vol.16); International Young Art 2000, Sotheby’s; Euro Art 2000, BCN Art Directe of Barcelona, Spain; and Mapping The Self, Telfair Museum of Art. A book/catalog titled Representation/Reality - Xuhong Shang was published by Plum Blossoms International, Ltd., in the spring of 2001 and a catalog titled Xuhong Shang, Momentary was published by the Mitchell Museum of the Cedarhurst Center for Art in Mt. Vernon, Illinois, in 2007.
As an art professor, Professor Shang has 16 years of college-level teaching experience. He has taught at Shanghai Teachers University; Tyler School of Art; The Savannah College of Art and Design; Kansas State University; and currently, Southern Illinois University Carbondale. In addition to his teaching, he has given 30 workshops and lectures in a variety of institutions for the past 15 years.
